Differences between L1-3 & L3-3

Post by jimmy74 »

I know that the L1-3 is tube rectified but are there any other difference? Do they use the same cards? Same functions and technology?

thanks
J.

I have a L1-3 and a L3-3. Both use the same cards and have the same functions. The L1-3 is somewhat older....

I know the L1-3 has a tube recrifier and also there is (I think) a control on the panel that is a rheostat instead of a selector as on the L3-3. So all the other functions are the same?

The older L1-3 uses a rheostat for adjusting mains, the later ones did have a selector switch like the L3-3. The cards are the same for both models, so functionality is also the same.

I have been searching ebay for an L3-3 and there are a few but they all have the rheostat instead of the switch. My question is which is better rheostat or switch?

thanks

L3-3 has no rheostat, only the older versions of L1-3.
The switch is the better one, the rheostat runs very hot, sadly also the components inside….

Hi Anton, nice to hear from you again... I'm pretty sure that the L3-3's available on ebay all have the rheostat, or am I mistaken?

thanks

Hello Jimmy
Nice to hear from you too.
As far as I now only the very old version of L1-3 has the big rheostat, I have seen and worked on eight L3-3’s, all of them has a switch.
You can recognize them by the scale around the mains voltage adjust, in case of the switch the scale has graduations, if not it’s the rheostat (scale with increasing dimension)
But maybe someone change something in a unit, i.e. when a mains transformer was damaged, the replace them with a transformer from an older version, who now ?
Best Regards,
Anton

Ah yes I understand now, you are right they are all switches... do you think those prices are worth the deal?

thanks

Hello Jimmy
I didn’t take a look on ebay last weeks, but in general it’s hard to say and almost impossible to make a decision for someone else.
Read Jack’s tutorial: BUYING ADVICE, and why EBAY is not a good place to buy a tube tester....
Best Regards,
Anton
